A Study to assess the knowledge and Attitude regarding Blood Donation among adolescents in selected college at Nagpur City

ABSTRACT:
Background: Millions of people need blood transfusion each year. Most blood donors are unpaid volunteers who donate blood for a community supply. In poorer countries, established supplies are limited and donors usually give blood when family or friends needs a transfusion (directed donation). Objectives of the study: 1 To assess knowledge regarding blood donation among adolescents. 2.To assess the attitude regarding blood donation among adolescents. 3.To determine the correlation between knowledge and attitude regarding blood donation among adolescents. Material and method: This study was based on was descriptive research approach is used. The sample consisted of the sample will be adolescents students of Nagpur District. Convenient sampling method. A structured knowledge questionnaire and 5point LIKERT attitude Scale was used to collect the data Result: The findings shows that adolescents were varied in baseline variables. They had varying degree of knowledge and attitude regarding blood donation. On assessment of knowledge, 6.66% adolescents had poor knowledge, 31.66 % adolescents had good knowledge while, 5 % adolescents had very good knowledge, and 0% adolescents had excellent knowledge regarding blood donation. On assessment of attitude, 98.33% adolescents had positive attitude, while 1.66 % adolescents had negative attitude. The findings denotes that there is perfect positive correlation between knowledge and attitude. Conclusion: To concluded that from the study we found that if the knowledge of individual increases about blood donation, then his/her attitude towards blood donation is positive.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:
India facing a blood shortage of 3 million unit. Only 7% of people in India have O negative blood type. The current global blood shortage of approximately 40 million unit every year. More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Every day 100 of people required blood for transfusion, a surgery or some medical procedure. According to 2012 world health organization report, only 9 million unit are collected annually while need is for 12 million unit. The report also suggest that only 1% of eligible donors do so everyday. In India, the number of blood donors increased from 54.5% in 2006-2007 to 83.1% in 2011-2012, with number of blood units increasing from 4.4 million unit in 2006-2007 to 9.3 million unit in 2012-13. Statistics show that there are 234 million major operation in India, 63 million trauma-induced surgeries, 31 million cancer related procedure, 10 million pregnancy related complication which required blood transfusion. India has highest number of death with china fifth, 2 million slum children die due to shortage of blood every year in India in 2009.
MATERIAL AND METHOD:
This study was based on Descriptive Research Design is used. The sample consisted of sixty adolescents students of college at Nagpur city. Non-probability convenience sampling technique was used and structured questionnaire to assess knowledge and 5- point Likert scale to assess attitude among adolescents was used. The prior permission of the authorities was obtained for conducting main study. Informed consent from the subject taken prior to the administration of the tool than data were collected.

The above table shows the distribution of the samples according to age group in which 6.66% were from 17 years of age, 25% were from 18 years of age and 68.33% were from 19 year of age.
The above table shows the distribution of sample according to gender in which 70% were female and 30% were male. The above table shows distribution of the samples according to the residential area in which majority of 85% were belongs to rural area and 15% belongs urban area.
The above table shows the distribution of sample according to religion in which 86.66% were from Hindu religion, 0% were from Muslim religion, 11.66% were from Buddhist religion and 1.66% were from other religion
The above graph shows the distribution of sample according to type of family in which 25% belongs to nuclear family, 73.33% were from joint family, and 1.66% were from single parent.
The above graph shows the distribution of sample of socio–economic background in which 86.66% of students were from Middle class, 8.33% were from lower class and 55% were from upper class.
The above table shows the distribution of the sample of studying year in which 60% of students were from 1st year and 40% students were from 2nd year.
The above table shows the distribution of sample according to source of information in which 33.33% were getting information from relative, 41.66% were getting information from News paper and 25% were getting information from health worker.
After the assessment of knowledge majority of 56.66% student were having good level of knowledge, 31.66% students having average level of knowledge, 6.66% having poor level of knowledge and 5% student having level of v. good level of knowledge about blood donation.

The attitude among adolescents towards blood donation was positive (98.33%) and negative (1.66%).
DISCUSSION:
The findings of the present study have revealed that 56.66% students were having good level of knowledge, 31.66% students having average level of knowledge, 6.66% having poor level of knowledge, and 5% students having very good level of knowledge about blood donation And the result of attitude in our study is 98.33% students having positive attitude and 1.66% students having negative attitude towards blood donation.
